Trip Overview

Pikey Peak Trek is the best alternative to the over-crowded Everest Base Camp Trek. The trek continues to off-beat trails while displaying the majestic panorama of Mount Everest (8848m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), and Makalu (8463m). The trek culminates at Pikey Peak (4068m) that offers one of the best views of the mountains in the Everest range. Although a newly opened trek, it allows the trekkers to enjoy the Sherpa culture minus crowd and hassle. The quaint surrounding, lush rhododendron forests, and cool air offer tranquility of the highest sort.
 

The 9-day Pikey Peak Trek begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu. The trip starts with a scenic drive to Dhap village in the Rolwaling Valley. You’ll trek past the rolling hills with cascading waterfalls, terraced fields, and lush rhododendron forests. Passing Jhapre and Lhamuje, the trek gradually ascends to the reach Pikey Peak High Camp. Next, a pleasant climb concludes at the top of Pikey Peak. From the top, you can catch the majestic sight of the Mount Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), and other mountains in the Everest, Gaurishankar, and Kanchenjunga ranges. Afterward, you’ll take a detour and head towards Thuptenchholing Monastery via Loding. You will find the engravings of Mani script on the walls and prayers flag throughout the Sherpa village en route. Thuptenchholing Monastery is one of the most revered Tibetan styled Buddhist monasteries in the region. The final leg of the trek takes you towards Chiwong Monastery via Junbesi and then to Phaplu village. Chiwong Monastery is another of the biggest monasteries which also hosts the Mani Rimdu festival every year. You’ll fly from Phaplu to Kathmandu hence ending the trip. Pikey Peak Trek can be undertaken anytime during spring and autumn seasons.

Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu | 1300 m

A company representative will receive you at the Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, you can rest and relax at the hotel or take a stroll around the nearby areas. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Drive to Dhap, Trek to Jhapre | 2920 m | 4 hours

After an early breakfast, begin your journey with a drive east of Kathmandu to Dhap village, following a scenic route along the hills and the Sun Koshi River. Upon reaching Dhap, take a short break before starting your trek along a forested trail. Walk past numerous orchids and small settlements to arrive at Jhapre, a serene Sherpa village with beautiful monasteries and stupas. Overnight stay in Jhapre.

Day 03: Trek from Jhapre to Pikey Base Camp | 3640 m | 6-7 hours

Start your day with magnificent views of the mountains to the north. After breakfast, the trek begins with a gradual climb through rhododendron forests to Bhulbhule. The trail then splits, and you take the right path toward Taklung Danda. Continue along the lush forested trail to reach Pikey Peak Base Camp. Overnight stay at the base camp.

Day 04: Sunrise at Pikey Peak, Trek to Loding | 2515 m | 8-9 hours

Wake up early to hike to the Pikey Peak summit for a stunning sunrise view. From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramas of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, Manaslu, and Annapurna ranges. Descend past Pikey Peak High Camp and continue to Jase Bhanjyang for breakfast. Afterward, trek downhill through rhododendron forests to reach Loding. Overnight stay in Loding.

Day 05: Trek from Loding to Junbesi | 2700 m | Visit Thuptenchholing Monastery | 4-5 hours

After breakfast, follow the ridgeline trail from Loding to Tumbuk. The trail then descends along the Junbesi River to reach Junbesi village. From Junbesi, head north to visit the Thuptenchholing Monastery, which reflects Tibetan Buddhist teachings. Explore nearby meditation caves, art centers, and Lama schools. Overnight stay in Junbesi.

Day 06: Trek from Junbesi to Taksindu | 2960 m | 5-6 hours

Leave Junbesi and cross the Junbesi River to ascend through forests toward Salung. Along the way, enjoy views of Mount Everest (8848m), Chamlang (7321m), and Mera Peak (6461m). Continue the trail to Ringmo, then climb toward Taksindu village. Overnight stay in Taksindu.

Day 07: Trek from Taksindu to Phaplu, Visit Chiwong Monastery | 2459 m | 5-6 hours

On the final trekking day, descend through lush forests to reach Phaplu. Before arriving, make a short detour to visit Chiwong Monastery, perched high on a cliff overlooking Solukhumbu. This monastery is one of the three largest in the Everest region and hosts the famous Mani Rimdu festival annually. Celebrate your trek’s completion at Phaplu. Overnight stay in Phaplu.

Day 08: Flight from Phaplu to Kathmandu | 1300 m

Bid farewell to the serene Solukhumbu Valley with a short flight back to Kathmandu. The 30-minute flight offers views of lush forests and rolling hills. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. Spend the rest of the day shopping for souvenirs or relaxing. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 09: Departure

Useful Information

Accommodations and Meals:

You will be provided a room in a tourist standard hotel, while you are in Kathmandu. During your trekking, you will be provided room in teahouses. Please be informed that you will be sharing the room at teahouses. Please also note that the Everest region is located at far from the maddening crowd, therefore, teahouses may not be as much sophisticated as one finds them in town.

We will provide only breakfast while you are in Kathmandu and three-course meals while you are on trek. This means you will be taking breakfast and dinner at teahouse you stay and lunch in the mid of your trekking. Since the Everest region is geographically a remote place, you will be provided only selected but hygienic and organic local foods such as Nepali dal bhat, Tibetan soup, and bread, porridge etc.

Briefing of the Tour:

You will be briefed about the trek, you will be given information file, and importantly introduced with your guide.

Trekking Crews:

We will provide government registered, well-trained English Speaking guide, who holds enough knowledge about responsible tourism and eco-friendly tourism

We will also provide an assistant guide who is ready to help you with every situation.

We will provide a porter is provided to every two of you, and he will be carrying not more than 25kg.

We get our crews’ life get insured.

Certificate:

After the trek is over, you will be provided with ANTE adventure certificate.

Size of Group:

Trekking Group Size of our group can range from two people to ten people. In case you want to travel alone, do not hesitate to write to us. We will plan accordingly. In case, you more than ten people, please do let us know so that we can develop and improvise plans and itinerary.

Acclimatization:

Trekking to the Everest Region is as much difficult as it is technical. We give special priority to its technical sides as well. For this, we have designed an itinerary to allow you to get acclimatize naturally. We know the particular location you need to stay for rest, and the particular distance you need to walk slowly and so on. In case you get high altitude sickness, we have crews who know how to deal with it effectively and smartly.

How to respond to Altitude Sickness?

  • Please do carry first aid box
  • Please consult your physician
  • Please keep on informing our crews if you feel uneasy
  • Please do walk in the group so that you can help each other

Travel Insurance:

We would like to recommend you to get your trekking insured. Since you are trekking in probably one of the wildest and challenging routes, you need to be cautious of anything inevitable. You may need helicopter evacuation and get your trip canceled. You may get injured and get your baggage theft and so on.

Permits and fees:

The government local body charges some small amount of fee for every you make to the World Heritage sites, National Park, restricted areas along climbing. The price we charge includes all the fees.

Flight Delay in Phaplu-Kathmandu

Twin Otter and Dornier is the primary mode of transport to and from the airstrip at Phaplu. This service is fairly dependable. Sometimes, flights may be canceled due to mountain weather conditions or technical problems. In such case, Amazing Nepal will charter a helicopter to ensure you are on schedule for your international flight. The helicopter can fly if the visibility is 1500m, while the twin otter can fly if the visibility is 5000m, as per Nepal’s Civil Aviation rules.

The cost of the helicopter is payable directly to our Kathmandu office in the event that this service is utilized. US cash, traveler’s cheques, or credit cards (Visa Cards, Master Cards only) are accepted. You will be given a receipt upon payment so that you may claim the amount from your travel insurance. The minimum cost will be US$500 and a maximum US$3500 depending on the number of group members.

It is recommended that you should arrive in Kathmandu a day earlier before you start your trek. When you arrive a day earlier, you will have time to rest as well as time to buy trekking equipment. Similarly, it is best to have some extra days after you have finished your trek because your flight to Kathmandu might be canceled due to bad weather. So all together it is recommended to have a few extra days beside the trip schedule so that you don’t miss your International Flight.

If you want to book a trekking package with Amazing Nepal Trek and Expedition and still wondering about the essential equipment for your trekking journey, here we are more than happy to offer our checklist for your references. Please make necessary amendments to our checklist as per your need and convenience. For some case, if you couldn’t get any of these listed equipment/gears in your hometown or you’re in a rush before you fly to Kathmandu, don’t worry! The listed necessary items mentioned below can be easily purchased here.
Except for your daypack, all luggage will be carried by porters. A porter is available for two people who will carry maximum up to 25 kg. So, You have to be careful while packing your Bag or luggage.
 
Moreover, there is an allowance of 15kg per person on domestic flights. Additional personal items are not needed for the trekking portion of the trip which can be kept in the hotel’s storage room without extra cost.
