Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek - 17 Days

Trip Overview

The Salleri to Everest Base Camp Trek is an amazing alternative route to the base camp. This route is a perfect choice for those who like to skip a flight hassle of the Kathmandu-Lukla sector as it gets delayed or canceled often. This itinerary gives an opportunity to explore the most attractive Solu and Khumbu both trekking areas at one visit, which is something new while trekking in Everest. The journey provides a gorgeous new set of isolated villages and far-off settlements that diverts away from the well-trodden path to the base camp via Lukla. This route is introduced quite recently upon completion of the new motorable road construction. The road is making easy and quick access for the Khumbu region nowadays. Trekkers had to follow the classic Jiri to EBC route in the past years.

You will get magnificent views of the mountain peaks at every turn of the trail. Moreover, combined with the ethnic Sherpa culture of the small villages situated at the crevasses of the river valleys, you will get an unforgettable experience. Explore the Takshindo Gompa and walk along narrow canyons while crossing gushing white rivers of the region. Enjoy the tranquil beauty of the pastures and the terrace farms located underneath the shadowing mountain peaks. It truly is a gorgeous trekking experience and a great alternate option to the Everest base camp!

This trek also includes major aspects of Khumbu as well, like visiting the vantage point of Kalapatthar from where you can see the entire panorama of the Everest massif spectacularly! Likewise, the trekking trail also includes visiting famous Himalayan towns and villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, from where the views and sights of the majestic peaks are quite indelible. Pay a visit to the Everest View Hotel- the highest located hotel in the world and enjoy the dramatic scenery of the cerulean Himalayas from the balcony as you enjoy delicious butter tea. Relax at the dainty tea houses at Dingboche and enjoy the heavenly trekking journey as you make your way through destinations like Pheriche and Ringmo.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264ft)
Namaste and welcome to Nepal. Our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu - Phaplu – Ringmo and trek to Takshindo (3071m /10072 ft.) 8 hours’ drive and 30-min walk
We drive from Kathmandu to Ringmo via Phaplu and commence a short hike to Takshindo. The drive to Ringmo is quite beautiful, and you can get fleeting glimpses of the countryside life of Nepal. Leaving behind the bustling city, the drive goes through gorgeous rural settings, winding along hills and farms.  Phaplu is a small town with an airstrip that is surrounded by verdant green hills. Upon arriving at Ringmo, you will follow a gentle trekking track that leads towards Takshindo, all the while enjoying the mountainous landscapes. Along the way, you can see many Sherpa and Rai people going about their day working in the mountain farms. You can also see the old Cheese Factory at Takshindo. Since the people relay on their domesticated mountain goats and yaks, the cheese factory manufactures dairy and cheese made from the mountain livestock. It is healthy and quite delicious as well! Overnight stay at the guesthouse. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.
Day 03: Trek from Takshindo to Khari khola (2194m/7196ft), 7 hours
In the morning, we will visit the local lively area of Takshindo and also pay a visit to the Takshindo Monastery. Then, we will begin our trek descending alongside the Dudh Koshi River from where the trail then ascends through several Sherpa villages, terraced fields and forests to Khari Khola. The natural setting of the Himalayan terrain, accompanied by the gushing river, presents quite a relaxing trek. The journey is also a great way to learn about the Sherpa Buddhism culture that is so prevalent in the mountains. The Lamas of the Takshindo Monastery teach young monks and Buddhist disciples about the culture.  The intricately decorated murals of the monastery and the camphor-lit atmosphere are quite exotic and you can also offer your prayers for a safe and successful journey. Overnight at guesthouse, breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Day 04: Trek from Khari Khola to Puiyan (2890m/9479ft) 6hrs
We start the day with a climb towards Puiyan from Khari Khola. Trekking through small Sherpa villages and a forest inhabited by monkeys, we will pass through a narrow canyon before arriving at Puiyan. The giant hills that surround the trekking trail are cultivated to terrace farms that are brim with vegetation and agriculture. Small stone houses with colorful plastic or tin roofs line the villages and are often complimented with the traditional Buddhist prayer flags hung against bamboo poles.  The giant mountain peaks tower over the villages like colossal serrations and are quite haunting to look at. While trekking, you can also see the Sherpa women working on the farms in their traditional Sherpa attires. Overnight at guesthouse, breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Day 05: Trek from Puiyan to Phakding (2652m/8699ft), 6hrs
Continuing the climb from Puiyan, we will make our way to a ridge at 2800 meters, before a gradual ascent to the final ridge from where we descend to Surke, following the trail towards Phakding. The trekking trail is considerably flatter and meanders along the contours of the valley through thick scented mossy forests. You will trek on the trail cut deep into the steep rocky side of the valley where you can come across mule caravans making their way alongside you. At the end, the trekking trail joins back onto the Dudh Koshi River Valley and you can see amazing views of the ebbing river below as you stand high above on the steep side of the impenetrable valley. Overnight at guesthouse, breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.
Day 06: Trek from phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m/11,283ft), 5-6hrs
With the Dudh Koshi keeping you company, you will make your way to Namche Bazar today. The rocky terrain of the region gives a peculiar feel which is unlike any other. As you cross the many suspension bridges, which are the lifeline of this area, you will also walk past many shrines of the Buddhist faith adorned with colorful prayer flags. A gradual uphill trek takes you to Namche Bazaar, a hub for all the tourists that are trekking in and around this region which exhibits a superb example of the Himalayan hospitality. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
Day 07: Acclimatization day at Namche
Acclimatization is key for any high altitude trek, and you will do so by trekking around Namche and exploring the surrounding areas. You will be witness to the glory of the giant mountains such as Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku (6608m), Nuptse (7861m), Lhotse (8516m), and so on. You also have the option of visiting the Sherpa Museum which showcases the culture and the way of living of the legendary Sherpas. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
Day 08: Trek from Namche to Tyangboche(3,867m/12684ft), 4-5hrs
After a fairly easy walk till the village of Phunke Tenga, you will then begin to ascend to reach Tengboche, which has blissfully nestled in its vicinity the Tyangboche Monastery. The oldest and the most sacred in this region, Tyangboche Monastery sits picturesquely in the forefront of the gorgeous Ama Dablam (6856m). If you are lucky, you might be able to observe a religious ceremony being performed in the monastery. The monastery has beautiful walls with beautiful paintings and has small Chorten inside the premises. Overnight in Tyangboche.
Day 09: Trek from Tyangboche to Dingboche (4,358m/14,295 ft), 5-6hrs
Today you will descend on the first part of the trek as you cross dense forests of conifers and rhododendrons with splendid views of the Everest (8848m) and Ama Dablam (6856m). As you move further, you will cross the Imja River and reach Pangboche, which also has a monastery and some extraordinary views of the mountains. Through the rocky terrain, you will see multiple fields of different crops as you make a gradual ascend to reach Dingboche. Overnight in Dingboche.
Day 10: Acclimatization day at Dingboche
Today is the second acclimatization day of this trek, and you will spend the day hiking around Dingboche. The ridge from behind Dingboche offers majestic views of Cho Oyu (8188m), Makalu (8485m), Lhotse (8414m), Taboche (6501m), Cholatse (6440m), and also the beautiful Imja River flowing serenely through the Imja Valley.  This hike will not only excite your visual senses, it will also give you a reality check on just how beautiful nature is. Overnight in Dingboche.
Day 11: Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4,928m/16164 ft), 5-6hrs
Initially, you will be walking on a wide path which later becomes narrow and rocky. You will enjoy the scenes of the Himalayas on all your sides as you pass through rather historic places; this area also has the campsite of the first successful Everest summit by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. You will walk on the steep paths leading to the moraine of Khumbu Glacier and pass through the ridge which has many shrines with colorful prayer flags in the memory of the trekkers who lost their lives during various expeditions. You will notice the peaks of Pumori (7161m), Nuptse (7861m), and snow-covered mountains getting nearer as you reach Lobuche. Overnight in Lobuche.
Day 12: Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshep (5,160m/16,929ft) & hike to Everest Base Camp (5,320m/17,450ft) 6-7hrs
The trek to Gorakshep and then forward to Everest Base Camp is challenging as you will mostly be walking on glaciers and on rough terrains. The rocky terrains often make you struggle to find a balance and thus require slow walking. When you reach Everest Base Camp, you will see many colorful tents set up by the expedition teams against the icy rocky terrain covered in snow. With views of Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), Pumori (7161m), Khumbutse (6749m), and Nuptse (7861m) above and the glacier below, you can get this overwhelming sensation of being a miniscule yet lucky organism. You later hike down to Gorakshep for the overnight stay.
Day 13: Early hike to Kala Pathar (5550m/18,204ft) & Trek back to Pheriche 6-7hrs
Early in the morning before the sun is out, you will make your way to Kala Patthar. You do so because Kala Patthar gives the best view of the mighty Everest (8848m) and the surrounding mountains as the sun gradually rises and the light changes beautifully almost making the mountain feel like they are coming to life. This fills you up with a sense of awe and a sweeping run of emotions. This is also a great opportunity for photo enthusiasts to take lovely photos of the mountains: Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), and many other peaks of the Mahalangur Himalayan Range. After this, you return to Gorakshep and head toward Pheriche. Overnight in Pheriche.
Day 14: Trek from Pheriche to Namche (3440m/11283ft), 7hrs
Today’s trail descends to Debouche, rises through rhododendron forest to Tengboche. A long descent leads back to Phunki Thenga before the climb to Sanasa (where the trail forked to Gokyo). The walk along the broader trail to Namche Bazaar is easy, where you will be staying tonight.
Day 15: Trek from Namche to Lukla (2800m/9184ft), 7hrs
This is going to be yet another happy day in your trek. After your breakfast, you set out for Lukla, from where you had started walking some two weeks back. Since you are completing this trek, you will be having great joy. But then this is also the day you will be leaving all the natural beauty back. But memory matters. We are sure that memories associated with this adventure are going to make you happy throughout your life. We will celebrate your victory back at Lukla
