What level of mountain biking experience do I need for this trip?
The Upper Mustang Enduro is designed for experienced mountain bikers with a solid level of fitness and technical skills. The ride includes high-altitude climbs, long descents, technical singletrack, loose terrain, and some sections that require bike pushing or carrying. It’s ideal for Enduro and Trail riders who enjoy physical and mental challenges, remote landscapes, and flowy trails with plenty of character.
What kind of terrain can I expect to ride?
This adventure covers a diverse mix of terrain—from high-altitude desert tundras and yak trails to rugged ridgelines, alpine valleys, ancient footpaths, and canyon descents. Expect loose gravel, technical switchbacks, rocky outcrops, and hard-packed singletracks. Some trails are centuries old and have been used by nomads and yak herders. Every day offers a different landscape and style of riding.
What is the highest elevation we reach during the trip?
The highest point on the trip is approximately 4,600 meters at Tingli Bhaodha Bhanjyang, on the Nepal–China border. Riders will also cross multiple high passes, such as Chogo La (4,230m), Gyu La (4,077m), and Paha Pass (4,218m). Proper acclimatization is built into the itinerary, but riders should be prepared for the effects of altitude and maintain good hydration and nutrition.
Do I need to bring my own mountain bike?
You are welcome to bring your own Enduro or Trail bike for this adventure. Your bike should be in excellent mechanical condition and ideally feature full suspension with 140–170mm of travel, tubeless tires, and a dropper seat post. If you prefer to travel light, high-quality rental bikes are available upon request—please inform us in advance to reserve one.
Are domestic flights included in the package?
Yes, all domestic flights listed in the itinerary are included in the trip cost. This includes flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as the thrilling Pokhara to Jomsom flight, which offers incredible aerial views of the Himalayas.
What kind of accommodation can I expect?
Accommodation during the trip is a combination of boutique hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara and authentic teahouses throughout the Mustang region. Teahouses are basic but comfortable, offering cozy beds, hearty meals, and an opportunity to experience local hospitality and Tibetan-influenced culture. In some villages, you may stay in heritage teahouses run by families with deep roots in the region.
Are meals included in the trip cost?
Yes, all meals listed in the itinerary are included. You will be served a mix of local and international dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In the mountains, meals are mostly prepared using locally sourced ingredients. Typical foods include rice, lentils, vegetables, noodles, pasta, soups, and occasionally meat. Vegetarian options are widely available.
Is travel insurance required for this trip?
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory. Your insurance policy must include coverage for emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation or interruption, and high-altitude adventure sports, specifically mountain biking. Please carry proof of insurance with you during the trip.
Will there be vehicle support during the ride?
Yes, a full support vehicle will accompany the group throughout the trip. The vehicle is used for gear transfers, rider pickups, shuttles to trailheads, and emergencies. In some sections, particularly the high passes and remote trails, bike pushing or carrying is necessary as vehicles cannot reach those areas—but your main gear and bags will be transported by vehicle.
What permits are required, and are they included?
The trip includes all necessary permits and entry fees. Most importantly, the special Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (worth USD 500) is included in your package. You will also receive other permits such as the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card where applicable.
When is the best time to join this trip?
The best seasons for the Upper Mustang Enduro are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these times, the weather is generally clear, dry, and stable. Spring offers blooming alpine flowers and warmer temperatures, while autumn provides crisp air and spectacular visibility of the Himalayan peaks.
Can I join the trip as a solo rider?
Yes, solo riders are welcome to join scheduled group departures. It’s a great way to meet like-minded riders from around the world and share an unforgettable experience. If you prefer a private departure or custom itinerary, that can be arranged as well. Just contact us for options and availability.
