Rara Lake is the most prominent and deepest freshwater lake in Nepal located at the height of 2,990 meters. Its lively surrounding offers a scenic adventure tour. The lake is protected by Rara National Park, which is home to animals like musk deer, leopard, Himalayan Thar, wild boar, including many species of wildflowers and herbal plants. Snow trout, a species of fish, is only found in Rara Lake. Wander through the pristine forests on the remote trail of western Nepal. This off-beaten trek to Rara Lake is hands down one of the most beautiful treks frequented by thousands of visitors every year. 

After enjoying an excellent trekking adventure to Rara Lake, trek back to Talcha airport to catch a flight to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj, you will head to another fantastic destination that is ready to surprise you. With all its magnificence and glory, the Bardia National Park welcomes you!

Home to the endangered species like the royal Bengal tiger and one-horned rhino, Bardia National Park boasts untouched wilderness in the wonderfully tranquil environments of the Terai region. As you spend time with the local Tharu communities here, you will fall in love with their culture and tradition. Enjoy the Tharu cultural program and join in the dance as you admire their traditional songs. Their unique stick dance is full of entertainment. You will head out to explore the national park on a full day jeep safari tour. As you drive deep into the lush green jungle, you will witness the rich biodiversity that Nepal is famous for. One-horned rhino, Bengal tigers, and wild elephants can occur in your sight. 

During the trek, accommodation facilities are mostly arranged in homestays. This will give you a fantastic opportunity to interact with the locals and indulge in exciting conversations. You will be provided with basic meals consisting of Dal-Bhat during the trek, whereas you will have more options in other places.

Day 1: Arrival day
After touching down at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by the representatives. They will be waiting for you outside the airport, holding a placard with your name on it. Head to your hotel as you view the hustling and bustling Kathmandu city. You can relax and refresh at the hotel. You will meet your guide who will accompany you on the trip. After the guide briefs you on the day to day itinerary, you are free to stroll around nearby places.

Day 2: Fly to Nepalgunj
Early in the morning, you will head to the airport to catch your flight to Nepalgunj. The one-hour flight will take you southwest flying over the lush green hills and valleys of central and western Nepal. Once at Nepalgunj, a private vehicle will pick you up and take you to the hotel. You can refresh and then head out to visit the local market of Nepalgunj. You have the rest day to yourself. Overnight in Nepalgunj. 

Day3: Fly to Talcha Airport and trek to Salleri
After breakfast, you will head to the Nepalgunj airport to catch your flight to Talcha in the Mugu district of Nepal. After landing at Talcha airport (also known as Rara airport), you will prepare for the trek to Salleri. The entry to Rara National Park is at Salleri. There are a few hotels here, but you will be accommodated in a homestay. Enjoy a local meal consisting of Dal-Bhat with the family hosting you. Overnight in Salleri.

Day 4: Trek to Rara Lake
After showing the entrance permit of Rara National Park at the check post in Salleri, you head out to Rara Lake. After walking for about an hour, you come to a flatland. Then, as you descend, you will get to glance at first sight of the beautiful Rara Lake. Walk by the lake as you frequently stop to view the magical scenery. Cross a bridge to arrive at your destination finally. Overnight in a homestay.  

Day 5: Rara explore and Murma Top hiking
From the lake, you can hike uphill to Murma top. This place is one of the main highlights of the trip. Walking for about three hours, you will be passing by Murma village, a mostly untouched Magar village to reach Murma Top at 3726 meters. From Murma Top, you will be amazed by the scenery of the turquoise lake surrounded by forests of juniper. The view from this place will take your breath away. 

Day 6: Trek back to Talcha
After soaking in the final sights of Rara Lake, you head back to Talcha today. You will take the same path you took to ascend. Overnight in Talcha. 

Day 7: Fly to Nepalgunj and drive to Bardia National Park
From Talcha airport, we fly back to Nepalgunj early in the morning after breakfast. The flight can sometimes be delayed or canceled due to air traffic control, mechanical issues, or in most cases, adverse weather conditions. If everything goes right, you can enjoy the 40-minute scenic flight back to Nepalgunj. 

Outside the airport, a private vehicle will pick you up, and you will head towards Bardia. The two-hour drive from Nepalgunj will take you to the entry point of Bardia National Park. Your guide will take you to your hotel where you can refresh and relax. During dinner time, you will enjoy the Tharu cultural program and dance to the beats of their traditional songs. 

Day 8: Full day jeep safari in Bardia National Park
After breakfast, you will head for a full day jeep safari in Bardia National Park. Ride through the dense jungles full of amazing sights of wildlife. A guide will be accompanying you in the jeep safari, and he will briefly explain some instructions you should follow in the jungle safari ride. Hear sounds of monkeys chattering and birds singing. You will occasionally stop as you spot a herd of swamp deer, wild boars, and birds like Bengal florican, sarus crane, and peafowl. There isn’t a 100% chance of seeing a Bengal tiger. However, if you are lucky enough, you will get to spot this magnificent creature. 

Day 9: Drive to Nepalgunj and fly back to Kathmandu
Today, you will head back to Nepalgunj to catch your flight back to Kathmandu. Pack your bags, making sure that you do not leave any of your belongings behind. A private vehicle will take you to Nepalgunj. After two hours, you will reach Nepalgunj just in time for your flight. Enjoy the 40-minute scenic flight. Once at Kathmandu, you will head straight to your hotel and relax for some time. You have the rest of the day to yourself. You can either go shopping or a short sightseeing tour around the city.

Day 10: Final departure
Today, you will head back to your home country. Make sure that you have all your belongings with you. One of our representatives will drive you to the airport in time for your flight. If there is free time in the morning, you can go for some last-minute souvenir shopping.

Key Information

  • Nepalgunj-Talcha-Nepalgunj flight can be delayed or canceled mostly due to adverse weather conditions. Besides, occasional mechanical issues can be common. In such cases, your travel guide will try and reschedule your flight as soon as possible.
  • Rara Lake lies in the Himalayan region, whereas Bardia lies in the lowlands of the Terai region. During spring and autumn seasons, cold winds can be felt in the mornings and evenings around Rara Lake. On the other hand, Bardia has humid weather conditions. 
  • You must pack layered clothing for the trip. Also, pack a jacket to battle the cold wind in the morning and evening while you are in Rara Lake. Hats and sunglasses can be useful for the jeep safari at Bardia National Park.
  • You can opt for activities like jungle walk, bird watching, and canoeing in the Rapti or Narayani rivers. If you come across any animal while doing any of these activities, make sure to be quiet and observe them from afar. 
  • While in Rara National Park, you can also opt for bird watching and boating in Rara Lake. Make sure that you do not litter around since it is a protected area.

Except for your daypack, all luggage will be carried by porters. A porter is available for two people who will carry maximum up to 25 kg. So, you have to be careful while packing your bag or luggage.
 
Moreover, there is an allowance of 15kg per person on domestic flights. Additional personal items are not needed for the trekking portion of the trip which can be kept in the hotel’s storage room without extra cost.
